Imagine this – you have uploaded a very long video clip on your YouTube channel and suddenly discovered that the video contains no audio. You want to add a soothing background music or voice narration to the uploaded video clip but there are two problems with adding voice or audio narration to an already uploaded YouTube clip.
1. You have to download the original video file using YouTube downloaders, third party websites or a browser extension. Then you have to use a video editing program and mix the background music using Audacity, VirtualDub , Avidemux etc. When you have mixed the audio to the YouTube video, you have to upload the video all over again.
2. The second problem is that the first copy of the “audioless” YouTube video will be useless now. You will be left with duplicate copies of the same video and you have to delete the earlier one. This is extremely frustrating, when you are on a slow internet connection and uploading videos take more than an hour.
But here is a smart workaround using which you can replace the audio of a YouTube video with a background music, without having to download the video on your computer.
Using AudioSwap To Replace The Audio Of A YouTube Video
Thanks to YouTube’s AudioSwap feature, you can quickly add background music to any YouTube video which you have uploaded to your YouTube account. There is no need to download the YouTube video to your computer and use a video editing program for audio video mixing.
In their own words:
YouTube’s AudioSwap allows users to automatically add music to their YouTube videos. Using our extensive list of songs, you can spice up your videos with songs from your favorite artists and we are adding more songs everyday, so check back often.
The following video shows how to use YouTube’s Audioswap feature and mix background music to an already uploaded video in 5 minutes:
1. Login to your YouTube account, go to “My Videos” and choose the video where you want to add the background music. Click the “Edit” dropdown and choose “Audioswap”
2. Now you will see the audioswap page which looks something like this
Your video will be listed on the right side while a list of artists, sound tracks, album sounds and different Genres will appear in the left pane. You can either search for a particular song or music album using the AudioSwap search box or choose a song manually from the list.
There are a wide variety of Genres available e.g Instrumental, Dance, Acoustic, Holiday, Jazz, Rock so finding the perfect background music for your video clip should not be an issue.
3. When you are done selecting an audio for the YouTube video, click the “preview” button. You would be able to preview the changed audio, so if in case you dont like the background music, you can skip using it and choose another soundtrack from the list of Genres on the left.
Things to Note Before You Hit “Publish”
Please note that your original Audiotrack will be completely replaced with the new sound track or background music. It would be better if you upload a sample video of shorter duration and first test YouTube’s Audioswap feature.
If you are a member of YouTube’s partner program, you won’t be able to use YouTube’s revenue sharing for that particular video, if you have used the audio replace feature. YouTube may display advertisements on videos that contain soundtracks and background music from YouTube’s audioswap library.
When you are ready to replace the audio of the YouTube video, hit “Publish” and sit back for a minute or two till YouTube replaces the background Audio of the video with your chosen music. You should see a confirmation in your “My Videos” page as shown below:
Reload your “My Videos” page after a while and you will see that the earlier notification “AudioSwap in Progress” has disappeared. That means, YouTube has finished adding the selected music track to your video clip. Now isn’t that nice and quick ?
An Example Of An AudioSwapped YouTube Video
Yesterday, I replaced the bad audio of one of my YouTube videos with a custom background music from YouTube’s Audioswap library
Note: If you’re curious what the above video is all about, here goes the real story.
One fine evening I bought a new 1GB RAM but messed up my Computer’s BIOS completely. The BIOS was not showing the correct value of RAM. So I took out my video camera, recorded the entire BIOS screen and sent the Video URL to one of my Friends, who helped me set up my computer’s BIOS and show the correct value of RAM.
Coming back to YouTube’s AudioSwap, I agree this is a very old feature which I wasn’t quite aware of. I suddenly discovered it while uploading a screencast the other night.
Please note that you can only use this feature for the videos that you have uploaded to your YouTube account or channel (and not just any YouTube video you see out there).
Creative Uses Of YouTube’s Audio Replace Feature
YouTube Audioswap can be used on a number of typical situations. Let’s say you are searching for a legal copyright free music to be used as the background track for your uploaded clip. There is no need to buy any music and neither you need to spend hours finding those copyright free music sites. Just upload your Video to YouTube and search for a free music track from Audioswap library
Another advantage of the Audioswap library is when you are unable to find a good background music for your screencasts or video recordings. YouTube’s Audioswap library consists of a wide variety of Genres (including instrumental numbers and loops), so there are good chances of finding the perfect audio loop for your video.
The third advantage is of course – time. When you’re in a hurry and dont have time mixing a background score to the YouTube video, simply upload the blank clip to YouTube and mix one of the songs. Later, you can overwrite the background audio with another song from the same library.
