How to Completely Block Certain Websites in Windows XP

Sometimes it becomes very necessary to block certain Websites  in the PC.Especially when you have a younger sister and brother at your home who is obsessed by the social networking sites like orkut,Myspace etc.How to do block certain Websites completely in your PC ?

1.Go to the start menu and in the Run dialog box type “c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts”

2.A notepad file will open.Scroll down to the end until you find ” 127.0.0.1 localhost”.

3.Just after this line type 127.0.0.1 (your site address). For example if you want to block orkut type

127.0.0.1 www.orkut.com

4.Save that file and you have successfully blocked the website on your computer.

If you want to block more sites open the same file and type the address of the website in successive lines. If you want to unblock these sites then open the same file, delete the website that you wish to unblock and save it.Its as simple as that.

block

Note :At first i tried to block the Websites from the Internet options.Under the Security tab there is an option of Restricted sites.I added the site which i wanted to block but it never worked. If anyone could suggest me why it didn’t worked it would certainly add to my Knowledge.

This application http://bit.ly/bNSjiS is more effective than blocking websites because it just monitors websites during work hours. Team members can always use websites during lunch breaks. Also some employees need to use websites for work so it’s silly to indiscriminately block it.

Whether an application is blocked or not, self-control comes from within

    Ive been using http://bit.ly/bJwmma .
It uses a better procedure than blocking social media sites because it only monitors websites during production

hours. People/Employees still have the option to use it for a breather or during breaks .
Sometimes they use it for work too in helping reach decisions. For me its really unnecessary to block websites.

It all works except for when I opened it (step 2) local host wasn’t there so I wrote it in myself, also does it matter where you save it because in would only save in documents

You have to save the hosts file in the same location where it originally was and not in any custom folder e.g My Documents etc
