Kind Attention! The following vehicles/owner have been prosecuted by issuing notice on the basis of photographs upload on Facebook.
Social networking is going to the next level. The above message is a status update on the Delhi Police Facebook Page, the cops are using an innovative way to find people violating traffic laws in the capital of India.
The Facebook page which now has over 17000 fans, was started two months back and the residents of New Delhi have responded well. For example, in the following screenshot one of the users reports the case of a motorbike where the driver is without a helmet. The user took the snapshot from his mobile and uploaded the image at the Delhi Police Facebook page, quite interesting.

There are several other reports of careless driving, people talking on cell phones and vehicles parked at wrong locations. The Delhi police have issued 665 tickets using the license plate numbers shown in the photographs.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Mr Garg, the Facebook page never asked the citizens to upload photographs of law violating citizens. Instead, they wanted a forum where people can express their views and suggest necessary changes. The Cops now have a dedicated team of 4 officers who monitor the Facebook fan page, post information about closed routes and respond to comments.
I think it’s a great initiative on the part of Delhi Police to make the citizens aware of the traffic laws and to discuss issues which are often neglected. One advice: don’t take out your mobile and get busy snapping images of a fellow ruthless driver, it’s important that you drive home safe.
