How to Solve Google Talk Connection Error due to an Expired Security Certificate

Written by Amit Banerjee on 6 Jan, 2010 Under Software

Sometimes you may get a strange error message in Google Talk. You try to login with your username and password but Google Talk throws an error due to an expired certificate. This tutorial explains how to correct Google Talk login problems which are caused due to timezone conflicts.

Raja Sau, one of the regular readers of this blog asked:

I cannot login to the Google Talk desktop client. I continue to get the following error message “Connecting to Google talk network has failed due to an expired authentication certificate.”

The common cause of this expired certificate is due to time differences between your computer and the Google Talk servers. Following are the steps to get rid of the connection certificate annoyance in Google Talk:

1. Double click the date icon in Windows taskbar to adjust your Windows date and time settings.

2. This will open the Windows date and time properties. Navigate to the “Internet Time” tab and check whether “Synchronize with an Internet Time server” is checked or not. Check it if it is already unchecked. synchronise-date-time-internet

3. Go to the “Date and Time” tab and set the correct date, time and month.

Click Apply to save the changes and then try logging in to Google talk again. (Also read: How to find out who is invisible in Google talk)
