There are a lot of improvements in the newer Google Groups UI. The very first thing to note is the left sidebar, where you can organize all the Google groups in custom folders, bookmark them and quickly find the unread posts from a selected Google Group or from all the groups where you have joined as a member.

This is quite similar to managing folders in Google Reader, helps organizing stuff and unread items. You can arrange the folders alphabetically or simply drag and drop them in the order you want. There is also a sweet “Mark all as Read” button on the top, hit that link and all posts from a particular Google group are marked as read.

The Compact View of Google Groups Posts

If you use Google groups as the primary source of communication between all the members of your organization, chances are a lot of messages are exchanged every hour. Some of these messages may be very important and you might want to filter out important conversations from a Google group without having to spend a couple of hours reading each and every message (and the long discussion that followed as a result).

Thankfully, the Groups team have added a new “Compact” view in Google groups which allows group members to view all the posts according to priority. Clicking the compact mode hides all the conversations and highlights the post authors in the right column, so you can quickly decide which conversations are important and read them in the order of your priority.

The New Post Editor

There is more, posting new messages is easier than before with the introduction of a richer “Post Editor” in Google groups. You can add hyperlinks, attach files or images, add a “CC:” field and create web pages directly from the new post editor of Google groups. If you hate composing messages from your email and always wanted a dedicated post editor for Google groups, now is the time to switch.

The members page is another welcomed feature, you can quickly view all the members who have joined a Group by browsing to the members page. Editing your groups preferences is also made easy from the “My Membership” tab. More information is available on the Google groups blog

Setting up the Google group To receive backups

1.Create a New Google group using your Existing Google account.Name it something like “My Gmail Backup”.

Remember to keep the Access level restricted because you don’t want to let the World know what’s lying in your Inbox.

2.Create the group and Skip the Invite members Step.

3.Click on Group Settings and select the “Advanced tab”

4.Click on “ Use Google groups to manage Remote archive”.Enter your Gmail address.Do not enter your Google group’s email address here.

5.Copy the generated Google Groups address and keep it in a Safe place.You will need it later to forward your Gmail messages in this group.

Set up your G mail Account to Send the emails to Google Group archive

Now we will configure  your Gmail account to Send The emails you receive in your Google groups Archive that you just created.

1.Log in to your Gmail account and click on settings.

2.Now Click On “Forwarding and POP” and enter the Google groups email You created .

3.Now you can either Forward all Your Mail to the Google group or You can Forward only Selected mails based on a particular Filter.In the latter case Click on “Filters” and Set up your own filters.

4.Once you have set your Filters click on Save.That’s it.

Your Google group email is ready to receive backups. To test this feature send an email to your Gmail account.You should have a copy  of the mail In your G mail Inbox as well as in your Google groups email Inbox.Deleting an email from G mail won’t delete the mail from your Google Groups inbox.So whenever You wish to Recover an accidentally deleted mail log in to your Google groups mail and you can recover it.
