uTorrent has recently released an alpha version of uTorrent 3.1  which adds sync capabilities and external storage integration right within the desktop uTorrent client. With the sync feature working, you can quickly convert torrent downloads to a format that is best supported by the device where the file will be used. Let’s take an example to understand this scenario.

Let’s say you are downloading a really large video file in MP4 format but you will play the video file on your mobile device, which supports only 3GP videos. You don’t know whether the target video will be in Mp4 or 3GP format because the torrent file is still downloading and will take some time to complete. With the new uTorrent 3.1 Alpha, you can convert a file for a particular external device, right from uTorrent itself. There is no need to use a separate file conversion software. Neat!

From the screenshot above, you can see that my uTorrent 3.1 client has automatically recognized my Android handset and the external hard drive plugged into my laptop. Now there are two advantages of uTorrent 3.1 over earlier versions of uTorrent.

First, I can drag and drop the torrent downloads right into the external storage device, without having to change the download location. There is no need to cancel the download progress, as uTorrent will automatically sync the download to your external storage device, which includes external hard drives, Android, iPhone, iPad, PS3 and XBOX.

This is very useful when your computer is running on low disk space and you want to download the torrent on an external storage device, without having to start it all over again.

All in all, external device integration in uTorrent was a much needed feature because it makes file sync and copying to external devices a breeze. So it doesn’t matter where you are, as long as as you have that Android device and your desktop computer is running – you can add Torrents, RSS feeds from any website and remotely start a torrent download from Android.

As you can see, the app shows the current status of the torrent that is being downloaded, the upload speed, number of seeds and peers and the total file size that has been downloaded to your computer. Apart from monitoring, resuming, pausing and starting torrent downloads from your home computer, you can also copy completed downloads to your Android device. This is really a great addition which works only when you have uTorrent Version 3.0 running on the desktop computer at home or office.

The simple answer is that torrents are more flexible when it comes to downloading large files from different sources, as compared to direct http downloads. Let’s take an example.

Say you are downloading a large movie file via a direct download and using your browser and not a download manager. Suddenly the power goes down or your internet connection freezes in the middle or something else happens.Try to resume the downloads and you receive an error message which says

”The file can not be downloaded. Check the download location”.

Then you have to start the download all over from scratch, which is very frustrating.

But with torrents, you can easily resume the file downloads where you left and if you want to share large files with your friends – you can create a torrent, seed it and let other users download your file.

The torrent page will also show relevant data e.g no of seeds and leeches, MD5 hash and the file size.

I tried the service with some files hosted on my server and it worked like a charm. Please note that small file downloads are not supported yet and so is downloads over https.

All files added to the Burnbit service are public by default so you won’t be able to share files privately with chosen friends or contacts.

Some people think that torrents are an illegal way to download files from the internet while some think that not everybody has the legal rights to create their own torrent files. Before getting on to the procedure to create torrents, please note that creating and sharing torrent is fair unless you are distributing copyrighted material or files which you do not own.

How to Create a Torrent and Let Others Users Download Your Files

Turning your files into torrents can be very useful when you can’t find the download link of a really large file on the internet. Say you have tons of photos stored in your computer and you want to send all of them to a friend without using any file sharing service. Just put all the photos in a folder, create the torrent of that folder, seed it and pass the link of the torrent file.

Torrents can also be useful when you want to backup a large amount of data and do not have an external hard disk. Without much ado, here are the steps to create torrents:

1. To create your own torrents, you will have to download and install a torrent client. Some of the very popular ones are Bittorrent and utorrent which are available for free. For this tutorial I am going to use utorrent (read mutorrent).

2. If you are not sure about the bandwidth and upload speed of your internet connection, click “Run Tests” and optimize the settings for the best configuration
( for faster uploads and downloads ).

3. Click the small magic wand icon or choose “Create a New torrent” from the file menu.

4. This will open a new window where you can specify a list of files or folders which will be transmitted to a torrent file ( this is called seeding).

If you have multiple files to upload, put all of them in a single folder and select the folder as your source directory.

5. Under “Torrent Properties”, you have to enter a tracking URL so that other users or your friends can locate and download your files. You can use free trackers like the open Bittorrent tracker or the popular Piratebay tracker in the “Torrent properties” window.

Create and Seed Torrents

Then click the checkbox “Start seeding” and hit “Create and Save as”. This will allow you to save the torrent file anywhere in your computer which you will have to upload to a server so that other users can download it and add in their bittorrent clients.

6. Wait for some time until the files or directories are “seeded”. Once the seeding procedure is complete, you shall see the files seeding in the torrent window as shown below:

7. Once the torrent has finished seeding you have to upload the file to a torrent site. One of the free ways to do this is Fenopy.com, register for an account and use the upload button to upload your torrent file for free.

8. Once the upload is complete, the site will give you a URL which you can copy or bookmark, because this is the URL of the file you have to remember.

Host Your Torrents

Once you get the link of your torrent file, you can simply pass it on to your friends so that they can download it and add to their torrent clients and download your files.
