Video FAQ – Tools Of The Trade

Several readers have asked me about the tools and software I use for producing the screencasts. The following questions would satisfy most of your queries, if not all.

1.What Software do you use for producing the videos ?

A: I use Techsmith’s Camtasia studio 6 for the screen casts, Techsmith’s Snag IT for the images and Sony vegas pro for producing video effects, animations, transitions and so on.

2. What software do you use to produce the audio ?

A: Most of my screen casts do not contain any speech but there are some that do. I use Audacity for multi – track recording along with mixing the audio with the music.

3. Where do you get the music used in your screen casts ?

A: I use different websites to find the background music for my screen casts, will discuss this shortly in a detailed article. Meanwhile, have a look at jamendo.com

4. How much time it requires to finish a screen cast ?

A: The time required to produce a video depends on the subject and the quality of your project. As an example, this video took me entire 2 weeks while this one took me just 2 hours. On an average, a screen cast can take anything between 5 to 12 hours for the complete production.

5. Do You have any screen casting tips for bloggers?

A: Only one. Don’t think too much, just start.

Overtime, your skills will increase and this will reflect in the quality of your screen cast. Start with basic programs like Screengrabbler, Camstudio, Tipcam and slowly find your way towards advanced screencasting programs that support motion graphics e.g Sony Vegas pro, Adobe After effects and the like.
