Do you have a Mac machine? I know it is your priced possession because I have seen people looking at Mac owners with desire. Let’s put it aside and come to the core of this article.
You might have noticed that there is only one icon available for hard drives on Mac. When you connect multiple HDs, it will become pretty impossible for you to distinguish between each. All of them look exactly the same.
What if you give different icons to each one of them? Then, it will be easy for you find a certain drive just by a single glance. That’s why I have come up with this tutorial.
How to Change the Hard Drive Icons on Your Mac?
Changing the hard drive icons on a Mac machine isn’t a herculean task. You can get it done within a few minutes. The basic method is the same as that of changing any other icon.
Just follow the steps given below to alter Mac icons for hard drives.
Step 1: The very first step is getting your hands on icons. You should be aware of the fact that Windows icon files aren’t compatible with Mac. The icon files for Mac has .icn extension whereas those for Windows has .ico.
Moreover, you have to choose files with 512x 512 resolutions. In case you deviate from any of these requirements, you will not see the icon you wanted as the icon for your hard drive.
So, where can you get the icons from? Have a look at the following sources.
- The easiest way is finding icons in PNG format. You can do it even with a single Google Image search. Then, use iConvert icons to convert the image into Mac icon format.
- Devianart is another cool source from where you can get spellbinding icons.
- In case you are not satisfied with those two sources, you can also check IconArchive.
Step 2: I hope you have the proper icon file now. If you have multiple hard disks connected to your Mac at a time, I recommend you download more than one icon files.
Once you grab all the required icons, the next step is copying it. Don’t you know how to copy a file on Mac?
Suppose the name of your icon file is intel.icns, you have to right-click on it and choose Copy intel.icns.
Step 3: Next you have to paste the copied file. Open Finder and then access your computer under devices. Don’t forget to make sure that the hard disk whose icon you want to change is connected to your Mac machine.
Step 4: Right-click on the hard disk you want. You will get a few options in a context menu then. What you have to choose here is Get Info, which is the second item in the list.
Step 5: You can see all the information about your hard disk on the screen now. Just left to the name of the drive, you see the default icon.
First, click on it to kick-start the process of changing the icon. Once the selection is right, you can see a blue border all around the icon.
Step 6: Then, press Command+ V simultaneously to paste the icon there. In case you see anything new, you have to check the compatibility of the icon (size and format).
Step 7: Finally, you will be asked to confirm the password of the Mac. Enter it rightly and you are done!
The best thing about this method is you see the same icon for the hard disk on all Mac computers. Means the effect isn’t temporary.
