Fix: Some websites are not opening on my computer
Why some websites are not opening on my computer? Why are some websites not loading in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox? These are pervasive questions what I often get through email or comment on various social networking websites. You might be able to open your mail account or Facebook, but your browser might not load all the sites those are up and running.
Why some websites are not opening on your computer?
There are various reasons why some websites are not opening on Windows, and you can find some best possible solutions here. However, first thing first. All these solutions are for a regular user only. If you are an admin of any website, you might not get helpful advice from this article.
1. Check if the site is up or down
This is the most crucial part since I have seen many people wasting their time while solving this problem. Before heading over to any solution, you should check whether the site is running or not. If yes and you are unable to open that, the following solutions are for you. However, if the site is down, you should not do anything because it will waste your time for sure. Therefore, you can visit this site: http://isup.me/ and enter the URL that is not opening on your computer. If it is showing “Down,” continue with the following steps.
2. Open on another device
This is another important thing that you should do before doing anything else. If some websites are not opening on your computer, you should try opening them on your mobile or another computer. You can also ask your friend to do that for you. If those websites are opening on another computer, you are in trouble.
3. Open in different browser
If websites are not loading in Google Chrome, you should try Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox and vice versa. Sometimes some websites do not load in a particular browser, but they open in another browser or incognito/private mode. If it is opening in another browser, you need to perform the following steps.
4. Clear cache and cookies
5. Reset browser
If the solution as mentioned earlier is not working for you, you should try resetting the browser. Again the process is different, and it depends on the browser you are using currently.
6. Disable all add-ons/extensions
Sometimes some browser add-ons or extensions may behave weirdly. In that case, there is a high chance of getting this problem on your computer. To ensure, you should try disabling all installed add-ons or extensions of your browser and check whether you can open those websites or not. If you can open those sites, now it’s time to find the culprit. For that, enable one add-on or extension at a time and reload those sites. If you can’t open those sites after enabling a particular extension, you need to remove that completely.
7. Check Windows Hosts file
In many organizations, some websites are blocked by the network administrator. If you are having good luck, you might be able to open the Hosts file and remove the code from there so that you can open a particular site on your computer. To open the Windows Hosts file, you need to follow these steps:
- Open Notepad with administrator privilege (Run as administrator).
- Click on File > Open and enter this path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\
- Double-click on the Hosts file to open it.
- If you can find anything related to the sites those are not opening on your computer, you need to delete it and save your changes.
Disclaimer: You should perform this site at your own risk.
8. Scan PC with antivirus
If your computer is attacked by any malware or suspicious program, it might block websites from opening on your computer. For example, there is some malware those prevents users from opening any security related websites. In that case, you need to scan your computer with a reliable anti-virus like Avast or Kaspersky. If you have Malwarebytes, it would be great as well. This is meaningless to mention that you need to remove any suspicious file caught by your security shield. After that, do not forget to restart your PC for a fresh start.
9. Disable antivirus
It might be weird for you to read this solution after reading the trick as mentioned above but it happens. Talking about my personal experience, Kaspersky blocked a couple of sites from opening on my computer. Therefore, if you are not experiencing any weird behavior on your computer apart from not able to open some websites, you should try this trick as well. No matter what antivirus you are using, you should get an option to disable it temporarily. Also, some antiviruses often provide an alternative to whitelist particular site. You can try that as well.
10. Use VPN (if you are not using)
If you have landed on a country based website, you might not be able to open that unless or until there is an exception. For example, you cannot open Spotify in India. However, if you use VPN, you would be able to open that from any country. Just like that, some websites do not load at all when opening from a different nation. Therefore, you should try out some VPN software for Windows or Mac to check whether you can open them or not.
11. Disable VPN (if you are using)
Sometimes, we waste a lot of time on different things when the solution is right there on your computer screen. Being said that, sometimes the problem belongs to the VPN server, and we end up with different solutions for our PC. More specifically, if your VPN’s server has some issue, you might not be able to load some websites on Windows, Mac or any other operating system. In that case, disable your VPN software and check whether you can open those sites or not.
12. Disable proxy
Like VPN, the proxy can create the problem as well. There are some advanced malware those can change the proxy settings automatically and without any permission. On the other hand, if you have been using any proxy server with your system, follow this tutorial to disable it.
- Press Win + I to open Windows Settings panel.
- Go to Network & Internet > Proxy.
- On your right-hand side, make sure the Automatically detect settings is enabled and Use a proxy server settings is disabled.
13. Disable proxy from LAN settings
This is a prevalent issue when adware or different malware attack your PC. Different adware enables this setting and hence users get the problem to open that site on their computer. No matter which Windows version you are using, but you can find the solution here.
- Search for Internet Options in the start menu or taskbar search box if you are using Windows 10.
- Go to Connections tab and click on LAN settings.
- Remove the tick from Use a proxy server for your LAN option and save your change.
Now, try opening the same website that was not loading.
14. Add HTTPS in the beginning
In various nations, the government has blocked multiple sites. For instance, you might not be able to open some favorite torrent sites in India since Government of India has released a regulation for ISP’s to block those sites. However, in many cases, if you add https, in the beginning, you can open the site smoothly. In simple words, let’s assume that the site is http://www.a-custom-site.com and it is not opening on your computer. Therefore, you can try opening this site after adding the https instead of HTTP. So, the URL would be https://www.a-custom-site.com.
15. Flush DNS cache
If the site admin has recently moved his/her site from one server to another and changed the DNS records for any reason, you might get this issue on your computer. Therefore, there is an excellent workaround to load the current DNS records instead of old one. For that, you need to flush DNS cache. This is also possible to flush DNS cache on Android mobile.
16. Switch to Google DNS
After switching from your ISP’s DNS to Google DNS, many people were able to open blocked websites. To change the DNS of your computer’s internet connection, do follow these steps.
- Press Win + R, type ncpa.cpl and hit the Enter button.
- If you get Ethernet or Wi-Fi or Local Area Connection or anything else that you are currently using, right-click on that and select Properties.
- Double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
- Select the option that says use the following DNS server addresses and enter these in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server respectively: 184.108.40.206 & 220.127.116.11
- Save this change by clicking on OK button.
17. Reset Wi-Fi router
If you are using Wi-Fi connection like most the people in the world, you can also reset your Wi-Fi router settings. Almost every Wi-Fi router has a dedicated button to reset everything and restore the factory settings. After doing so, enter all the IPs and check if those sites are opening or not.
18. Check firewall software
Some websites won’t load if the Firewall is blocking it. By default, the Windows Firewall doesn’t block any website from opening in any browser. However, if you are using any third-party firewall software for Windows, you should check whether it is blocking your site or not. To determine that, disable it for a couple of moments and open those sites in the meantime. If you can open, it’s time to remove that firewall software from your computer.
19. Change time zone of your system
Although there is a mystery behind this solution it works in different conditions. No matter whether you are using Windows, Mac or Linux, you can change the time zone of your system without any problem. On Windows, open the Windows Settings Panel by pressing Win + I buttons. After that, go to Time & language > Date & time. On your right-hand side, you should find the option to set a different time zone.
20. Reset Windows
If none of the solutions are working, the last option is to reset your system completely. If you are using Windows 10, this process is straightforward.
- Press Win + R to open Windows Settings window.
- Go to Update & Security > Recovery.
- Click on Get started under the Reset this PC heading.
- Now you need to follow the screen instructions to complete the process.

Different users have marked different tricks as their preferred solution. If you are a victim, this is the time when you need to follow each step one by one to check which one works for you.
