EBook readers have been taking the gadget world by storm in the past couple of years. Now, with the rise of tablets with reader applications, the eBook format appears to be grabbing a strong hold on the literature market. The allure of carrying around your entire library and being able to access it wherever you desire is hard to resist. However, adding your own content to the devices has always been a little tricky. Many of them use proprietary formats that are hard to manage.
That is where Calibre comes in. Calibre is a cross-platform eBook manager that allows you to manage your current library, but also allows you to convert your own books and other documents into a format that your eBook reader will read. Lets look at conversion in a little more depth.
Calibre Supported Formats
Calibre can convert into and out of the following formats:
- Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT
- Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, SNB, TCR, TX
I’m sure you noticed that .doc is not on the list of input formats. This is due to the inconsistency of the .doc standards. Calibre suggests that the best formats for conversion are, in order of decreasing preference: LIT, MOBI, EPUB, HTML, PRC, RTF, PDB, TXT, and PDF.
Converting eBooks with Calibre
When you open Calibre, you will see a window similar to the one above. As you can see, it has a pleasing interface with good organization. for our purposes, we are going to select the book provided with the software and click Convert Books at the top.
A new window will open with the conversion options. You have many options when converting, such as editing the metadata for the book, changing its look and feel, and even searching and replacing words or phrases. For this example, we will just select an output format from the drop down window in the right hand corner (MOBI is what we will use) and then press Ok.
Once you start a conversion job, you will be able to click Jobs in the main window, and this window will open. Here you can monitor the progress of your conversions, stop a job,or view the details of the job.
Calibre Makes eBook Conversion and Management Quick and Easy
That’s it. It can’t be much simpler to convert your documents into the formats that are readable by your eReader or tablet device. Calibre is also a wonderful library management tool with a full set of features. I suggest you look into that as well.
