How to Reset Windows 10 Password if Forgotten


No doubt that Windows 10 is the most gorgeous and useful operating system for any kind of people like businessman, office employee, student, games, app developer etc. No matter what kind of work you do with your PC but you can easily upgrade your machine and use Windows 10 for your work. But, what if you have forgotten your PIN / password and want to reset Windows 10 password?

This is very easy if you are using Windows 10. It is not so complicated like Windows 7 or older versions. As Windows 10 uses Microsoft account, you can sign in to Windows 10 using your Microsoft account password. And if you have forgotten Microsoft account password, you can easily reset it from the respective website. This is the actual workaround to reset Windows 10 password if you have forgotten.

To reset Windows 10 password, you will have to enter secondary email ID where you will get a security code. Or, you can also get the code to your mobile number if you have a verified one. This is as simple as that. There is no tricky method. After resetting your Microsoft account password, you can sign in to Windows 10 using that.


Now, if you are using password lock, this is recommended to use PIN lock or Picture password. They are easier to use and tough to forget.

Now, if you are using Local account in Windows 10 machine, the workaround is quite different. You will have to follow a different guide reset Windows 10 password.

Reset Windows 10 password for local account users

Remove All Built-in Apps in Windows 10 from Current and All Accounts

At first, insert your Windows 10 bootable disk and select Repair your computer. Therefore, choose Command Prompt. Now, you will have to backup the sticky key. To do so, enter the following command,

copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\

Therefore, enter this command,

copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe

Following that, you will have to reboot your machine. When you are on boot screen, hit the Shift key 5 times to open command prompt with administrator privilege. Thereafter, enter this command,

net user username newpassword

do not forget to replace ‘username’ with actual local account’s username and ‘newpassword’ with your password that you want to set.

This method works great on Windows 7 and it should work on Windows 10 as well.

Here is yet another method to reset Windows 10 password if you have forgotten. This is easy and but takes a longer time than aforementioned methods. You need to call Microsoft technical support. They will verify the call with some required security questions. Following that, they will instruct you to reset the password.

If the above methods fail, then you can take use of the third-party Windows password recovery software –  PCUnlocker. It can help you get back into Windows when you forgot the password of either local admin account or Microsoft online account.

To begin, you need to download the ISO image of PCUnlocker and make a bootable CD (or USB thumb drive). After booting your computer from CD, select the user name you want to reset the password, and click the “Reset Password” button.  It will remove / unlock your forgotten Windows password immediately.

Losing or forgetting Windows password could be a frustrating experience, but thanks to these workarounds, it doesn’t have to mean losing the files on your PC.  You can easily reset forgotten Windows 10 password and regain access to your computer without reloading the operating system.
