How to Run Only Specified Windows Applications without Software


Windows is indeed one of the best operating systems out there. People are using this OS for many reasons including having a huge number of apps. The main reason, why people are currently opting for Windows is Windows 10, which comes with lots of functions those will certainly grab your attention.

Although, Windows 10 is feature rich operating system, but some people often think that the privacy and security are not so good in Windows 10. Therefore, you can use a variety of third party software like DoNotSpy, Win10 Security Plus etc. But, what if you want to run only specified Windows applications?

Let’s assume that you are going to give away your computer to someone and you do not want to let him/her open all the apps that you have installed on your computer. In fact, you just want to give the permission to open certain apps on Windows. At such moments, you can always opt for a third party software that will provide more options to manage your PC. On the other hand, you can create yet another guest account. But, that will take time for the user and the user will have more access than ever.


Therefore, here is a trick that will let you run only specified applications without using any third party software. This will be done using Group Policy Editor that is already in your computer and as said before, this will be done without using any third party tool.

At first, open Local Group Policy Editor. For that, just press Win + R, type gpedit.msc and hit enter. Here, you will have to navigate through the following path,

User Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> System

Under the System tab, you will get an option that is labelled Run only specified Windows applications.

Now, double click on this option. You will get a popup windows. By default, it should be set to Not Configured. Just opt for Enabled.

After that, click on the Show button that is positioned next to List of allowed applications. Here, you can find the following window,

Now, click on the empty box under Value tab and write down the app name with the extension. For more, do check out the following image,

At last, do not forget to hit the OK button. After that, whenever, you will go to open any other application, which is not listed on the aforementioned list, you will get some error.
