Sony Xperia Z5 Premium – Do You Really Need A 4K Display In Your Phone?

Display resolution – one of the major form factors that people look for in a smart phone. When you turn on your display, you would expect your screen to be clear while displaying icons, text and other information with appropriate brightness. Also, you would want to see photos and images with improved quality, videos with higher resolution and play games on your mobile screen. That’s why tech reviewers out there who test mobile screens look out for things such as brightness, color production, viewing angles from all sides etc to measure screen quality. This is the reason why mobile phones are coming with increased display size and higher resolutions with more pixels to give you better experience. But up to what extent?

The screen sizes of majority of the mobiles these days vary from 5-6 inches and display resolutions are typically 720p and 1080p. 720p is HD resolution that would easily fit into a 5 inch screen. 1080p display would work great in a 5.5 and 6 inches screen without any issue. LED TVs now are coming with 4K displays to show great video content displaying higher quality.
As you may already know, displays are made up of pixels. Depending on the screen size, the number of pixels will vary. More number of pixels then the display can support more quality. And then comes the other metric, called ppi (pixel per inch). This is a density metric showing how may pixels would be there per inch. Again, if a screen has more ppi, then it would display with more clarity and sharpness. The screen size would also acts as a factor while deciding what resolution should a screen contain.

Sony, the famous electronic manufacturing company announced a smart phone named Xperia Z5 Premium Dual with 4K display. This is really insane. Let’s take a look at this device and find out what it’s got.

THE Display

Sony Xperia Z5 has a 5.5 inch screen with 4K (also known as Ultra HD) display (3840×2160 resolution) with pixel density of 806 pixels per inch. This is 4 times 1080p resolution on a 5.5 inch screen. This would make this screen to be crystal clear as hell with great sharpness and amazing color production and viewing angles.

Would this be USP of this phone?

Not really because on a mobile phone with small screens, you wouldn’t be able to notice the difference between 1080p and 4k many times with normal usage. To know the difference, you first need to have high quality content such as UHD images and videos which would consume more memory. 1080p screen would display great content without any issue on mobiles.

Then, Is this necessary?

Yeah, now we are talking. If you observe high end flagships, all the specs you would see on paper aren’t necessary. But we are being able to fit in those amount of high-end specs in mobile phones and phablets and be able to run them with ease.

For example

You wouldn’t be able to tell difference in performance between phones having 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM. Similar case with hexa core procesor and octa core processor. Are those necessary? No. But this would definitely pushe the limits of technology and bring us new possibilities. So, these changes should always be welcomed.

Other Specifications

Keeping the display aside, this mobile packs great specs in other departments too.

Design
Xperia Z5 Premium dual is Waterproof and dust light (IPS6 and IPS 8) along with crazy display featuring dynamic contrast enhancer. It has premium shiny design with metallic finish and it’s measurements are of 154.4mm length, 76.0 mm breadth and 7.8mm thick. Clearly, this device has great processor and you can expect you can use this device without a single issue. It will handle multi tasking, High end processing and Heavy gaming very well. Since it’s 4K, you can play videos with greater quality if you have content. Coming to memory, you have expandable memory so would rarely find any issue with this.

Camera Department

Sony Xperia Z5 Premium Dual has a rocking 23MP AF camera with LED flash on the back and 5MP front camera for selfie purpose. The primary camera is a Wide angle 24mm G lens having Sony Exmor RS for mobile sensor and has great features such as Up to ISO 12800 photo / 3200 video , 5 times clear image zoom and 8x digital zoom, Steady shot with intelligence active mode for video stabilization etc. You can record 4K video also using this shooter. The front cam is a 25mm wide angle lens and comes with Sony Exmor R for mobile sensor and has Steady Shot and Full HD video support.

As you know, Sony is always good with cameras. Same case here. This device has one of the best smart phone cameras right now. You can get amazing shots on daylight and on low light conditions using this camera without any issue.

Final Thoughts

This is an above 55k device. Even though it is not affordable for many people, it has great specs embedded. Since embedding 4K display for the first time would cost more, in future, we can expect more mobiles with 4K displays and eventually decrease in cost. This is nice step by Sony and we should appreciate it.
